Dominant Design of Speech and Debate

The following is taken from Monument Publishing’s Ironman Curriculum, a curriculum I help rewrite every year with my team of writers and coaches. It is due for release August 1, 2015. Click here to preview lesson plans and syllabi.

I believe we have a dominant design for modern education. I’m a home school dad, but my roots are in public education (my undergraduate work is in secondary English education). But the lines have blurred quite a bit in today’s educational market. Home education, charter education, private education, online education, and public education all are trying to embrace the best educational model for growing kids.

Debaters in Prison

Washington State University debate students went into Coyote Ridge Corrections Center and taught these prisoners parli debate. EVERY DEBATER I KNOW should watch and share this video and realize the power of the activity that they are trained.

“The walls that keep us out also keep people from coming in…Maybe breaking down those walls, allowing ideas to flow back and forth, not punishing them by denying their own humanity to be able to converse. Being tough on crime cannot just mean that we lock people away for 10, 20 or 30 years, it has to mean that we take responsibility for the fact that they are coming back to our communities.”

The Harsh Parenting Question

"So what?" is an excellent question in parenting and in life.

I sent my highly gifted and talented son Micah to South Carolina to work on his cousin’s farm. My other sons are likely to follow later. Why? Largely because of a question we’ve been asking of our children lately whenever they speak of how great life is in their young and comfortable home: “So what?”

I want my sons to turn their talents into impacts.
